Summit Improvements for Whitefish Mountain Resort

With more than 300,000 visits last season, and on the heels of record-breaking numbers the year before, Whitefish Mountain Resort in Montana has lots money of money to spend on developments. This year, the resort is investing more than $1 M in capital improvements designed to enhance guest amenities and skier safety. The projects underway include expanding the Summit House, a new ski patrol HQ, and building a redundant well.

The remodel of the Summit House at the top of Big Mountain is adding a new 1,700-square-foot mezzanine level with more than 150 new seats. Whitefish Mountain Resort is known for its 360-degree views, and the new vistas at the mezzanine level will overlook the northwestern landscape. Guests will also enjoy the convenience of restrooms on the main floor, a bigger entryway, and an updated exterior.

Besides the Summit renovation, Whitefish is replacing the ski patrol building. A new two-story, 800-square-foot headquarters will replace the current cabin. The building will have plumbing, a patient treatment area, and a private office. An updated exterior will match the resort’s other buildings. A new redundant well will make water delivery to the new buildings more efficient and consistent.

Construction has already begun. Some projects, like the new ski patrol, will be completed this summer before the ski season opens. Because of the short building season at the summit, construction on the Summit House could take a couple of years, according to sources.

These projects follow the recent installation of a new lift, and the expansion of the base lodge area. The expansions total more than $3M, the largest capital investment for the resort. The Summit House was last remodeled in the late 1980’s, back when Whitefish was called Big Mountain Resort. These later renovations will greatly improve the skier experience at the summit and usher in a new generation of skiers.
