Snowshoe Mountain Resort has been in business for over 40 years. Opened in 1974, it is the largest winter resort in the Mid-Atlantic. The tallest peak of the Cheat Mountain that Snowshoe is built on is the Thorny Flat peak, soaring 4,848 feet above sea level. Skiers have access to 14 lifts, and three high-speed quads (Soaring Eagle, Ballhooter, and Western Express).

Snowshoe Mountain Resort offers 57 trails from beginner to expert and acres of backcountry. The Snowshoe Basin area with 41 trails, covering an 800-foot vertical drop provides Gangway, Log Slide, Camp Four and Powderidge for beginners, and bomber runs like Widowmaker, Choker and Knot Bumper for experts. The Silver Creek Area offers 18 trails, 16 of which are open for night skiing as well as three areas for freestyle terrain. For the adventurous skier, the Western Territory offers a 1,500-foot vertical drop, the highest in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, with 1.5 miles of downhill skiing on slopes like Cupp Runn and Shay’s Revenge.

Route 66 Ski & Snowboard Shop at the base of Snowshoe Mountain offers rental snowboards, skis, bibs and helmets. Equipment can be rented on a per day basis, with reasonable rates for weekdays and holiday weekends. The rentals from Route 66 are top of the line and they have experienced technicians working there. If you’re looking for a cozy and quiet place to stay, Bear Creek Lodge is just 9 miles from Snowshoe Mountain Resort. Bear Creek Lodge offers quaint rooms above a restaurant and walking distance from the Cass train depot. The Route 66 restaurant is a great place to grab a quick bite before heading up to the mountain.
