Colorado’s Star Resorts for Family Vacations in the Snow

You are brave. You are strong. You have backup plans for your backup plans. And neither snow, nor sleet, nor I-70 traffic will keep you from your goal of having the perfect family vacation this winter in Colorado.

But where to go?

Sure, the big resorts have all the marketing, the flashy lodging and nightlife, and maybe a few runs gnarly enough to shock your Facebook friends . . and maybe ten years ago that was exactly what you wanted.

With kids, let’s be honest, a few priorities have shifted.

Now what you want is the ability to move quickly from parking to the ticket window without having to take three buses and traipse a quarter-mile through a  high-priced base village while humping all the gear for your already exhausted eight year old.

Apres looks a little different, too. After your kiddos are burnt out on the slopes after only two hours, you need something else to do.

Here are three resorts in Colorado that’ll level up your family snow vacation.

1. Keystone Resort – This is a great option for families. The size of the terrain is manageable, but diverse. A little something for everyone from the gentle groomers, to some steeps and trees, and even an awesome park for the jib rats in the family. They also have night skiing and tubing. Sit down on the slope and enjoy their fireworks show. Close enough to larger towns, look for the aquatic center at Frisco, and some great downtown window shopping, as well as world-class breweries and family-friendly restaurants in Breckenridge.

2. Sunlight Mountain Resort – A hidden gem, only an hour north of Aspen, Sunlight is a smaller mountain with a huge family-friendly feel. Easy parking puts you at the base of the lift. The mountain is bowl-shaped, so even if you get separated, everyone will find their way back to the same place. By lodging in nearby Glenwood Springs, you and the family will have access to the world-famous Hot Springs pool, and hilltop adventure park complete with cave tours, roller coasters, and giant cliff swing.

3. Finally, for a big mountain option, check out Steamboat. With their free bus system, and beautiful “Old West” feel downtown, lodging options abound on or off the resort. The mountain itself offers a tremendous variety of terrain, and their ski school is world-renown. In the evening, try tubing at the bottom of the hill, or check out one of their many music festivals. After a cold day on the mountain, the whole family can head to Old Town Hot Springs for some soaking, splashing, sliding fun in their natural hot waters.

So be bold, be strong, and find an awesome winter vacation for the whole family this year! (And socks – always bring extra socks).
