Learn to Ski or Snowboard at Shawnee Mountain

There are six major ski areas in the Pocono Mountains, located in the northeast corner of Pennsylvania, and due to their incredible beauty—combining lakes, rivers, and woodlands over 2,400 square miles—nearly 25 million people visit the area each year.  Just an hour and a half from New York City and two hours from Philly, Shawnee Mountain is our pick for a mountain to learn to ski or ride in the East Coast. This is a perfect place for you or your kids to take a few lessons and explore the mountain over a long weekend. Their prices are better than most resorts and when you sign up for a lesson, your lift tickets, ski or snowboard rentals are included for just $90 (weekend group lesson price, subject to change).

Shawnee Mountain is not limited to beginners, with a 700-foot vertical drop and 25 percent of its trails rated as expert, but it is a smaller resort with six lifts and four carpet rides for the kids and just 23 trails. But the resort knows to cater to families and snowboarders, keeping it busy throughout the winter months. The terrain park, for example, is stacked with multi-jumps ranging in size (25′, 30′, 35′ & 40′), tabletops, spine, a 10-foot down barrel, double staircase, 32-inch rainbow bridge, full-scale rail and jib garden. They even play music while you practice. For beginners, there is a completely separate park, with loads of room to practice. You can even spend two or four hours on the hill snowtubing for super cheap. What a fun way to end the day with the kids!

We like their prices best of all. From lift tickets to lessons, it’s an affordable ski trip. This January, visit Shawnee Mountain and save even more to celebrate Learn to Ski Month. They are offering super awesome deals for lessons and are featuring a bring-a-friend deal, where you’ll get a discounted lift ticket if you introduce skiing to a friend. If you want to head to the mountain before then, don’t wait! They have some awesome lift ticket deals going on right now!!

The ski area has 100 percent snowmaking ability, just in case the snow doesn’t fall naturally. And once you’ve mastered your skills on the mountain, you could visit other mountains in the area with less than a 40-minute drive to both Jack Frost Big Boulder and Blue Mountain.
