Colorado’s Hesperus Ski Area Sees New Ownership

The Hesperus Ski Area, just 11 miles west of Durango, Colorado, has been around for more than 50 years. However, this year it falls under new ownership with its acquisition by the Purgatory Group in September. The 160-acres that constitutes the ski area is leased. The operation including its one chairlift, the lodge and rental shop are now the property of the Group.

Hesperus is about 32 miles from the Purgatory Resort, to its north. The more diminutive, 700-foot drop slope is most appreciated by local skiers, but should not be underrated. Just because this is not a mega-resort does not mean the trails aren’t great! The 26-trail Hesperus currently is subject to the weather for its snow levels. There are lights, so evening skiing is a plus here.

The Purgatory Group is owned by Durango-local James Colman, an avid skier himself. According to a recent article in the Denver Post, Coleman said:

“One of our top priorities is to make skiing more accessible and affordable to families. Bringing Hesperus into our family of resorts is a win for everyone, including the community, its employees, and the Four Corners Region.”

Hesperus will basically remain unchanged for the upcoming season, although following that, the area could see some improvements made.

Besides the Purgatory Resort and adding the Hesperus Ski Area, the Group also owns Arizona Snowbowl, and two resorts in New Mexico – Pajarito Mountain Ski Area and Sipapu Ski Resort.

Hesperus is scheduled to operate from 4 – 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. Saturdays, and from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Sundays, this winter.
