Wintergreen Ski Vacation Guide

Wintergreen is a great family resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Ski Levels

With more trails and slopes designed for beginners and intermediate skiers, it's great for families. And the ski school offers lots of learning opportunities for kids and new skiers. Wintergreen resort also offers adaptive skiing so that everyone can truly enjoy a day on the snow. If you're looking for a family ski vacation, Wintergreen Ski Resort is the ideal destination. Because of the many activities for kids, even kids as little as 2-years-old, the quality snowmaking and the terrain park, there's really something at Wintergreen for everyone.

Après Ski

Dining at Wintergreen Ski Resort is basically anything you want it to be. You can enjoy several different types of dining at the resort itself, or in the nearby area. From family-style restaurants with bars and jukeboxes to fine dining, you can choose almost any type of dining experience you want. Shopping is about the same, whether you stay at the resort or in that area to Charlottesville, which is just over 40 miles away. Even between the resort and Charlottesville there are theaters, arcades, fun parks for kids and all kinds of attractions and activities available for families.

Of course, staying at the resort is an option too, with a spa available and so many activities for kids the challenge is fitting them all in. And because Wintergreen has the largest snow tubing park in Virginia, it's easy to spend all your time not skiing and boarding sliding down the slopes on an innertube. Called The Plunge, the tubing trails offer fun for the whole family, six years and up. Ridgeley's Fun Park is there for even smaller children to enjoy the snow. For ages two and up, this little fun park includes things like mini tubing and other fun activities for little kids.

Nightlife at Wintergreen can include things like elegant après-ski or a local draft beer and songs from a jukebox. You can choose the type of après-ski experience you want right at the resort or in one of the many nearby sports bars, taverns, pub and restaurants that offer a full bar. From local beer on draft to elegant mixed drinks and wines, you'll be able to find the type of nightlife that suits you. Live music is available in some venues, with most of the at-resort après-ski destinations of the more quiet type because of the resort's family atmosphere.

Wintergreen Snowboard Vacation Guide

Riders Guide

Wintergreen Ski Resort, with 26 trails over 126 skiable acres and a vertical drop of over 1,000 feet, offers enough ski action for most skiers, but does cater to beginners and families more than the expert skier. The top mountain elevation is about 3,500 feet which measure up to many other mountain resort areas. There are 5 chair lifts and 2 surface lifts with a capacity of about 11,200 skiers hourly. The longest run is 1.4 miles, and about 14 slopes are regularly lit for night skiing. The mix of trails is 23% beginner, about 42% for advanced and expert skiers and the rest are intermediate and fairly challenging.

Parks and Pipes

Wintergreen’s 2 terrain parks offers up a huge number of features for boarders, but they reshape the park regularly so you’ll never know exactly what’s there to enjoy. Spines, hips and tabletops are just some of the features they regularly have available. Many of the features are kept lower than average in one area that’s designed for the beginning snowboarder. New beginner features and lower tabletops were part of the terrain park improvements this season. A half-pipe is available for boarders to test those free-styling skills, too.

Out of Bounds

Because Wintergreen has the biggest snow tubing park in Virginia, this is a top destination for those who’ve had their daily fill of skiing and snowboarding. If you’ve been snow tubing before, you probably haven’t experienced it like this. The Plunge is Wintergreen’s tubing park that offers a 100-foot vertical drop. Snow tubers hit speeds of up to 40 miles per hour, making this a don’t-miss activity at Wintergreen. There’s also The Zip. Hang on to the bar and zip down the trail for 900 feet, reaching speeds up to 40 miles per hair. Guests must be 8 or older and weigh between 75 and 250 pounds to Zip down this ride.

Hangout & Hookup

At the resort there are a variety of bars and restaurants where you can enjoy après-ski, as well as many locations near the area where people can enjoy a drink or a hot beverage after a day on the snow.
