Sugar Mountain Ski Vacation Guide

This resort is nestled in the wooded highlands of western North Carolina in an area that is renowned for its stunning scenic views, plentiful snowfall, and some great cruiser runs and steep slopes. It’s a great family friendly resort that has affordable amenities, wonderful trails, a host of activities, and plenty of fun.

Ski Levels

The resort spans 115 acres spread over 20 slopes. The 1,000 feet of vertical give snowtubing, skiing, and snowboarding fans a lot to experience. Nearly 40 percent of the terrain is rated for beginners, 40 percent is rated as intermediate, and the remaining 20 percent is suitable for advanced skiers. The great assortment of terrain ensures that skiers of all age and ability level will be able to find terrain suitable for them. There is a great ski school on the premises that is wonderfully outfitted with helpful and capable PSIA-certified staff who will teach first-timers and younger children the basics and safety principals of the mountain. 

Après Ski

Located slope side are two large cafeterias with an impressive menu ranging from soups, sandwiches, salads, and much more. There is also space to bring your own food to enjoy. The Last Run Lodge has a wonderfully intimate fireplace and great options for hearty meals and a satisfying array of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The town of Banner Elk has an array of dining options like quaint cafes, Chinese and Italian restaurants, as well as American cuisine and steakhouses just a short drive from the resort.

The resort hosts fun, family friendly events throughout the year. There is a fantastic ice skating rink, which makes a perfect gathering place and the hub of the ski village. One of the most renowned events during the year is Sugarfest, which is a weekend-long festival filled with activities, live entertainment, and fun for the whole family. The resort prides itself on being an active ski resort. There are always hosting fun diversions in order to entertain their guests. The also teams up with many of the area’s lodging to offer its guests fantastic ski and stay specials throughout the season as well as discounts on activities, lift tickets, dining and more.

Rider’s Guide

This beautiful and family friendly resort is located near Banner Elk, North Carolina has long been a family favorite. The resort has 20 slopes in total, and 15 are lit for night skiing and riding each night of the week. There are more than 1,000 feet of vertical and 115 acres to explore. In fact it’s North Carolina’s biggest ski resort. There is even a double black diamond run, perfect for thrill seekers and advanced riders. The longest run is almost 1.5 miles long and a great cruiser run.

Parks and Pipes

Sugar’s terrain park has many great features and is serviced by a handle tow lift. The terrain park contains jumps, hits, ramps, banks, jibs, rails, quarter pipe, and other constructed or natural terrain features. They are constantly at work improving and evolving the park. The great variety of features makes it suitable for various skill level riders and freestyle skiers to enjoy.

Out of Bounds

The nearby town of Banner Elk has great shopping and dining options. There is also ice skating, snow tubing, snowshoeing, and other fun activities for the entire family. For families and beginners, we recommend taking advantage of the ski and snowboard school that has customized lessons for children, adults, first-timers, and more advanced riders.

Hangout & Hookup 

There are plenty of tasty restaurants in the area to enjoy international cuisine and a relaxing après ski drink. The Last Run Lounge is located on the mountain and has an impressive array of beer, wine, and spirits. The bar has a beautiful view of the mountainside and a lovely fireplace perfect for warming up after a day on the slopes.
