Hunter Mountain Ski Vacation Guide

This is a very popular New York ski area. The resort spreads over three mountains and offers skiers of all experience levels over 50 well-groomed trails and runs. Located in the northern Catskills, its proximity to New York City makes it incredibly easy to get to by plane, bus, train, or car.

Ski Levels

Hunter Mountain provides nearly 250 acres of skiable land. Of the 55 runs at Hunter Mountain, 30% are rated for beginners, 30 percent are rated for intermediates, 27 percent are rated for advanced, and 13 percent is reserved for expert skiers. There are 11 lifts to take you around and more than 1,600 vertical feet to explore.

There are a range of classes available for those who are looking to learn to ski, hone their skills or even try something completely different. In fact, the National Ski Areas Association recently voted Hunter Mountain as having the "Best Program to Grow the Sport to New Participants." If you want to try your hand at snowboarding, Hunter Mountain offers the innovative Burton’s Learn to Ride program which employs snowboard technology that helps beginners learn the fundamentals in a series of steps.

Après Ski

Lodging options are plentiful in and around the area. Those who are looking to stay right on the mountain should check out the Pinnacle Condominiums and the Kaatskill Mountain Club. These two locations are slope side, as well as noted for being some of the best in the area.

Après ski is also strong and they have plenty of different places to eat or enjoy a night out. There are more than ten dining options and several bars that offer live entertainment on the weekends. VanWinkle’s Restaurant and Santini’s both come highly recommended. The Main Bar and the Atrium Bar at the Copper Tree provide perfect après-ski drinks and a wonderful slope-side atmosphere.

Rider’s Guide

Hunter Mountain is known for being a beautiful three mountain ski area that provides perfect runs for all experience levels. There are 11 different lifts that take riders around the more than 240 acres of skiable land. Of the 55 runs in the resort, 30% are perfect for beginners, 30% are rated as intermediate, 27% are rated for advanced boarders, and 13% are reserved only for expert boarders. If you’ve never snowboarded before but would like to learn, Hunter Mountain is the place to you. They offer a new and innovative approach to learning the fundamentals of snowboarding, Burton’s Learn-to-Ride program uses the latest technology to help teach beginners the basics and ensure that they ride correctly.

Parks and Pipes

The Empire Terrain Park definitely lives up to it’s name and features massive jumps, jibs, boxes, and rails that are guaranteed to thrill.

Out of Bounds

The ski area focuses hard on providing the highest quality skiing and snowboarding, but it also recognizes the need for off the slope diversion. There are plenty of activities at the resort and in the surrounding areas. Snow tubing 1,000 foot runs is a perfect outdoor activity for those looking for a little something different. At the resort various other events, like races and festivals are held throughout the season and activities in the area abound, from sleigh rides to rock climbing the Catskills’ will keep you busy.

Hangout & Hookup

Check out Santini’s, located slopeside at Hunter Mountain for great drink specials and awesome pizza. The Main Bar and the Atrium Bar, both located slopeside, offer up a great place to meet up with friends and unwind after a massive day on the slopes.
