Whiteface Mountain / Lake Placid

There are not many areas left in this world where one can experience nature so profoundly unspoiled as Whiteface Mountain, near Lake Placid. Encompassing a huge body of land within Northern New York is the immense Adirondack State Park. This park is a paradise of sparkling rivers, glimmering lakes, and majestic old mountains, making this region a popular vacation destination for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. Adirondack is the largest State Park in the U.S. and is bigger than Yellowstone and Yosemite National Parks combined. And thanks to its immensity there are many beautiful areas that make up the park, including Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, and Schroon Lake.

Olympic Games Two-Time Host

The village of Lake Placid has been the site of two Olympic Winter Games, the first one in 1932 and the second in 1980. Since then, the Olympic village has grown and expanded into a behemoth of winter sport activities. The Olympic center features ice skating, speed skating, hockey, and curling. The sports complex features bobsledding, luging, skeleton, and biathlon shooting range. And don’t forget the enormous Olympic jumping complex that launches skiers the length of a football field.

The ski stats are nearly as impressive. There are 283 acres of land, including 35 in-bounds double black wilderness skiing and 53 acres of tree skiing. There are nearly 90 trails divided as follows: 37 percent expert, 43 percent intermediate, and 20 percent beginner. The resort averages 200 inches of snow, but also has extensive, state-of-the-art snowmaking on 98 percent of its land. Most impressively, Whiteface Lake Placid boasts the biggest vertical in the East with 3,430 feet!
