Lutsen

The North Shore of Cook County, Minnesota is graced by what may be the greatest inland treasure of all time: Lutsen Mountains. Just one visit and you’re hooked! It’s no surprise that guests keep returning year after year. Who wouldn’t fall in love with a place with so much to offer? At the shores of Lake Superior, the ground rises sharply, shrouding Lutsen with a halo of pristine peaks, a sense of wilderness seldom seen. And onto that incredible beauty, working in harmony with nature, gently rests one of the most picturesque and exciting ski resorts in the country.

Four Mountains on the North Shore of Lake Superior
The mountains of Moose, Mystery, Eagle, and Ullr combine to make up the ski area. Lutsen is as good as it gets, and not just in the Midwest either. The resort stands on its own merits with a lift service vertical rise of 825 feet, 1,000 skiable acres, and over 95 ski and snowboard runs to pick from.

From the get-go, you’re going to know there’s something different about Lutsen Mountains in Minnesota. For starters, Lutsen enjoys over 800 feet of vertical drop—far more than any other resort in the Midwest region—and a peak at nearly 1,100 feet. But it goes beyond that. When you look at Lutsen, you’re not thinking “glorified hill,” you’re feeling a mountain all the way.

Lutsen’s Ski Learning Park is located on Ullr Mountain, and terrains are groomed to facilitate education. You’ll find gentler slopes, broader pathways, beginner-level moguls, and part of the mountain is set aside as a slow-skiing area, so you’ll be safe and secure while you learn. The trails Of Ullr Mountain are made up entirely of beginner and intermediate runs.

Next in the progression is Mystery Mountain, with 51 percent beginner, 34 percent intermediate, and the remaining 15 percent designated as expert trails. The scenery is outstanding, and there’s a lot of space. One memorable feature is the tree skiing, through mature maple forests. Mystery even has three back-country runs. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to work on technique over the long runs at Mystery Mountain.

The top of the Eagle Mountain is almost all black and double-black, with an escape route for intermediate and beginning skiers and snowboarders. Eagle is impressive, but if one day you should tire of it or get curious about the remaining mountain, head on over to the gondola area, halfway down the mountain, and catch a ride over to Moose Mountain. Moose Mountain is the vertical challenge. Primarily black and double black trails, there are some intermediate runs as well, and a prerequisite 3 percent green trails for beginners who unwittingly bite off more than they can chew.

We haven’t even gotten to the ski patrol, nightlife, or other attractions yet—and there are many of them – but it’s already clear that Lutsen Mountains Resort is the prime choice for any Midwest ski or snowboarding vacation.
