Located in southeastern Maine, this is a great ski resort with awesome steeps, short lift lines, and inexpensive lift tickets. It is the closest ski resort to Portland and a local, family favorite.

Isolated Ski Resort

There is very little around Shawnee Peak; it is truly isolated, deep in the wilderness amidst breathtaking scenery. Shawnee Peak’s idyllic surroundings are very special to the resort and as a result they have partnered with the Conservation Fund in order to work together to make the ski area carbon neutral. Although the mountain is isolated, visitors and tourists can stay and dine in nearby in Conway, New Hampshire, which is only 20 minutes away.

Boasting a vertical drop of 1,300 feet and 239 skiable acres, it’s a pretty massive East Coast ski resort. Designed with families and groups in mind, there are a nice variety of slopes for all skill levels, as well as two terrain parks available for freestyle skiing and snowboarding. Their snowmaking abilities cover 98 percent of the non-gladed trails and there are groomed trails and natural, ungroomed trails. the night is lit up on 19 trails, along with the terrain park for night riding. Kids’ racing is a huge deal and they proudly host their own race team and a variety of racing clinics and events. The ski school offers instruction for all experience levels, as well as lessons for those who want to learn to tackle the half-pipe and the challenging areas in the terrain parks.

Off the Slopes

Lodging options in and around the mountain are as numerous as the amount of trails and terrain on the mountain. Located slope side, The Shawnee Peak House is a 10 bedroom, self-service guesthouse that sleeps up to 44 people and is ideal for large groups. Each room features its own bathroom. The common area offers a fully-equipped kitchen, double fireplace, games, cable TV, DVD player, phone and WIFI. There are also new, luxury condos that offer the perfect, slopeside lodging for families. Each condo contains a garage, gas fireplace, washer and dryer, and fully-equipped kitchen with all new appliances. Off the mountain there is a huge variety of guest houses, condos, hotels, motels, cottages, country inns, and bed & breakfast inns available in the nearby Bridgton and Freyberg areas.

The base lodges also offer cafeterias and a variety of other dining options. The cafeterias serve from opening until the park closes. The towns of Bridgton and Norway in Maine and Conway in New Hampshire offer a variety of casual and fine dining options, as well as some awesome après ski spots. Be sure to check out the local favorite, the Black Horse Tavern in Bridgton.

Getting Here

Getting to Shawnee Peak is easy by car because most of the journey is made on US Route 302, a major interstate, it is less than one hour from Portland, ME, 2 hours from Portsmouth, NH, 2.5 hours from Boston, MA and only 20 minutes from North Conway, NH. Its proximity to major airports makes it incredibly accessible by plane as well.
