Mohawk Mountain
Mohawk Mountain is an area richly steeped in history. Founded by Skiing Hall of Famer and inventor of snowmaking, Walt Schoenknecht, Mohawk was born from a vision of a great skiing destination in the heart of the Berkshire Mountains.
Remains a Family Business
Mohawk has remained a family business and has worked hard to maintain its strong ties to nature by working very closely with Connecticut’s EPA. Their efforts to protect the area has kept it as beautiful as when Walt had his vision more than 60 years ago. In addition, the mountain has remained a big part of the community and you feel welcomed by their staff and ski patrol. The ski area envelops 107 skiable acres and more than 350 acres of beautiful and pristine state forest. There are a total of 24 trails, a vertical drop of 650 feet, nearly 10 lifts, snowmaking coverage on 95 percent of the terrain and night skiing on half of all the trails. The runs are divided between skill levels as follows, 30 percent beginner, 50 percent intermediate, and 20 percent advanced.
The mountain takes safety very seriously and maintains a full ski patrol that is dedicated, experienced and always willing to help. They are trained in outdoor emergency care and prepared to handle any situation that may arise. There is also a great ski and snowboard school. First timer lessons include a full or half-day lesson, lift ticket, rental equipment and a personalized fitting. There are also a variety of other lessons including group lessons, children’s programs, women-only instruction, junior race team, and an assortment of customizable private lessons available from Mohawk’s staff of highly experienced PSIA certified instructors.
Off the Slopes
Mohawk Mountain has several great dining options slope side. The main lodge has a variety of standard slope side fare at affordable prices. The dining area is open from breakfast through dinner, and it’s a great place to warm up and refuel. The Pine Lodge Restaurant is a full-service ski-in / ski-out restaurant. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy the rustic atmosphere as much as their delicious, hearty meals.
You will not find slope-side lodging, but there are plenty of nearby towns offering great lodging options. Whether guests seek affordable and comfortable hotels, historic inns, romantic bed and breakfasts or a quiet rustic lodge, the Berkshire’s are a big tourist draw in Connecticut and there is ample lodging available in the greater Cornwall area, often at heavily discounted prices.
