Angel Fire

The year-round resort town of Angel Fire in New Mexico is located on a wooded high mountain valley in Carson National Forest. This scenic resort is carved into the beautiful Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains with terrain that is perfect for skiers and snowboarders. There is more than just alpine skiing available, including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, tubing, ice skating, sleigh rides, snowmobiling, snow blades, snow skates, and ice fishing.

On the Slopes

Angel Fire Resort is family friendly, not too big but still offers a wide variety of runs to ski and ride. There are 70 skiing trails. The mountain’s elevation is 8,600 feet at the base and 10,677 feet at the summit, with a vertical drop of 2,077 feet. The average snowfall is over 200 inches annually and there is also snowmaking for 52% of the mountain, with 85% of all beginner terrain covered. For snowboarders, there are four great freestyle terrain parks and the only halfpipe around. Freestyle skiers will also be challenged by the rails, jumps, and tabletops. The resort has also added a variety of Fun Boxes (wider, easier, pre-manufactured rail systems) to the mountain. These offer more options for freestyle maneuvers than traditional rails and jumps. For a unique experience try visiting during the annual World Shovel Races, held in mid-February every year since the early 70’s. The concept of racing down a hill on a snow shovel was started by lift operators who began using their work shovels as a quick way to ride back to the mountain base after the workday. The festivities include race clinics, snow shovel sculpture contests, children’s activities, and evening entertainment. There are numerous lodging and accommodation options to choose from including, lodges, cabins, hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and condominiums. In addition, there are many restaurants and shops.

Getting Here

When traveling by air, take a connecting flight into Albuquerque International Airport. There you can rent a car or catch a bus or van shuttle service to Angel Fire. In addition, there are municipal airports in Taos and Santa Fe. The driving distance from Albuquerque, New Mexico is 153.88 miles, averaging about three hours.
