Opposites Attract: Favorite Runs in Vail Valley

Talk about polar opposites. These resorts may be right next to one another, but they don’t agree on much. If you’re looking for variety—Vail is the measuring stick for manicured runs and big bowls, while Beaver Creek offers a leisurely getaway with hidden gems.

Vail
One of the country’s most popular destinations, based on acreage Vail is one of the largest resorts in the nation. Ask people why they visit and most will say it’s for the breathtaking back bowls accessed by dropping off the back side of any of Vail’s summits. It boasts 3,041 vertical feet and gets an average of 346 inches of snow a season (November to April). That snow pairs nicely with its 193 trails suited mostly for intermediate and advanced skiers. On powder days, I’d opt for Vail as opposed to Beaver Creek. And don’t waste time. Favorite run: Vail’s Ledges on the front side. It gets steep then levels out, getting steep again for a fun run.

Beaver Creek
People don’t visit Beaver Creek to be seen on the scene. They visit because they’re serious about skiing. With an average of 325 inches of powder per season (November to April), the best thing about Beaver Creek isn’t necessarily the 300 days of sunshine, but that it’s north facing. Read: good snow conditions. It’s got an abundance of wide groomed trails for beginners and intermediates, and three terrain parks and a half pipe for the die-hard ski bum. Favorite run: Harrier off the Centennial super chair makes for a wide, hilly cruiseway.

If you can’t decide between the two, don’t. Ski Vail Valley in the 2014 – 2015 season with one of these season passes.
