1. Kids ski school – Nearly all resorts offer ski or snowboard lessons of some type. Look for one that has a separate kids program. This is important for several reasons: One is that usually a kids program will include a day care aspect. You will be able to drop the kids off for a full day if you want, or at least longer than the typical lesson would last. This allows you time to go catch some moguls or ski that black diamond you’ve had your eye on. Without the day care, you’ll barely be able to make one run to the summit before heading back to pick up.

Another benefit to a kids program is that the instructors will likely be trained in teaching kids, and will be much more effective and approachable, allowing you to feel comfortable and relaxed while your children are in their care. They also have special equipment available that will help your child have a great time no matter what their level.

2. A quality rental department – Even if you are avid skiers and boarders it’s not always feasible for growing kids to have their own equipment. It’s also possible for a smaller rental department to run out of kids sizes, so the more stock they have the better your experience will be. Incidentally, a separate kids ski school will also often include its own rental department with experts at fitting kids.

3. A ski-in/ski-out lodge or lodge at the summit – Kids have to use the bathroom at all the worst moments. To save yourself from spending all day going in and out of the lodge to use the bathroom, select a resort that has an easily accessible lodge at both the bottom and top of the mountain. You also don’t want to find yourself racing down the slope because your child has to go just as you board the lift to the summit.

4. Tubing – This is the ultimate family friendly winter sport. If your children are young, this might be the only part they participate in, and it will give them a great memory of winter sports and a desire to return. If your kids are older, tubing is a perfect end to the day when they’re too tired to do much else, but their not quite ready to leave the hill.

5. Package deals – We all know that the more people you bring along, the more expensive skiing and boarding can get. Look for any sort of group discount or reduced price kids tickets. Every penny counts and snagging a deal can mean the difference between a once in a lifetime adventure and an annual tradition.
