Thinking of heading to Ski Town, USA (as most who have been there come to call it?) You're in for a real treat! This champagne-powder skier's wonderland is located in north central Colorado (near the Wyoming border, a bit east of Craig, Colorado, west of the Rocky Mountain National Park. Getting there by road isn't terribly convenient, but that just means less congestion in this unforgettable ski vacation destination! From Denver, take I-70 west, then north on Highway 9, which leads into Highway 40 north, all the way up to Steamboat Springs. The drive is under 3 hours, and about 150 picturesque miles – well worth it for such an extraordinary ski experience! Or cut that down to half an hour by flying in to Yampa Valley Regional Airport, just half an hour from Steamboat!
Ranked as the #1 Family Ski Resort in the country may make it sound a bit like a trip to Disneyland. Not to worry! There are over 60 Black Diamond and at least half a dozen (maybe more) DOUBLE-Black runs on this massive mountain! This amazing place legitimately offers a huge variety of choices and runs for skiers of all levels of ability, from the very first day ever, through professional experts – all graced with some of the finest, smoothest powder anywhere in the world! The ski professionals truly deserve their cudos at Steamboat, too. The Ski Patrol are paid professionals who take their jobs seriously. Able to work literally anywhere, they've chosen Steamboat, and see to your safety. The instructors are a cut above as well, able to work with the youngest and most senior of skiers equally well. Whether you don't even know how to get your boots on yet, or if you've been skiing parallel most of your life, you've got plenty to gain from these experienced, certified instructors. The laid-back, fun-loving attitude and perspective of Steamboat makes learning a blast for the entire family!
Apres-ski covers a lot of territory in Steamboat, starting right there on the mountain and all across town. There's good wholesome family entertainment, fine dining, or fast(er) food. There are pubs which serve grub, dancing, live music, and lots of fun to be had by all. If your group is inclined to be in early, there are plenty of choices for them. If you want to howl halfway til dawn, that choice is there as well! What's certain is that EVERY visitor to Steamboat raves about the great time!
It's true that it takes a dry cold to make powder, and Steamboat has champagne powder all over the place! Be sure to dress accordingly; light layers and a breathable, waterproof shell are the rule, and neck gators and full-face ski masks are sometimes advised. With today's clothing technologies, you can be warm and dry without wearing a ton of gear, but come prepared, and remember that the wind chill at the top of the mountain often makes a dramatic difference in the temperatures!
The locals even consider the snow at Steamboat “amazing”. If there's one piece of advice, it's to give yourself as many days as you can possibly muster for this ski vacation, because no matter how long you're there, it's never enough!
