Tennessee has an enjoyable ski resort, Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort & Amusement Park, in the heart of the Smoky Mountains of eastern Tennessee, where the Smokies meet the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, and Appalachia. What you may not yet know is that, for over 30 years, Ober Gatlinburg has operated the largest aerial tram in the country. The tram has carried more than 18 million passengers to date, 125 at a time, in two counter-balanced cars that run between downtown Gatlinburg and the mountain resort. More news: two brand new cars made of aerospace aluminum were installed in April of 2007. With 15% more window space, those breathtaking views of the Smoky Mountains are better than ever! Exciting things are afoot at Ober Gatlinburg!

When you reach the mountain, you're in for a few more pleasant surprises. There's an indoor mall and amusement park at the resort, featuring a huge indoor ice skating rink! And the resort isn't just one mountain. Its trails are hosted by two separate mountains, with quad-chairs running to the top of each.

The chairlift to the far side of the resort carries you to the peak, dropping you off at the beginning of along gradual intermediate run. The trail is almost a mile long, with nearly no curves. What an awesome place to work on carving turns as you fly down the mountain! The other main chair goes up the mountain that hosts the two black diamond runs (as well as beginner and intermediate trails.)

Every trail on the mountain is completely accessible, covered by snowmaking equipment. The entire mountain is lit for night skiing, and all but one of the trails is open at night. (Grizzly, a black diamond trail at the far left of the resort, was apparently deemed too steep and remote to light and patrol safely.) Mogul Ridge, the second black diamond trail, remains open at night to challenge advanced and expert skiers.
