From the get-go, you're going to know there's something different about Lutsen Mountains in Minnesota. For starters, Lutsen enjoys over 800 feet of vertical drop – far more than any other resort in the Midwest region – and a peak at nearly 1100 feet. But it goes beyond that. When you look at Lutsen, you're not thinking “glorified hill,” you're feeling a mountain all the way.
One mountain? That's not quite correct. There are four of them! Lutsen is comprised of Moose, Mystery, Eagle and Ullr mountains, each with its own forté, its own strengths and appeals.
Ullr Mountain is a good place to start a ski or snowboard education. Lutsen's Ski Learning Park is there, and terrains are groomed to facilitate that education. You'll find gentler slopes, broader pathways, beginner-level moguls... and part of the mountain is set aside as a slow-skiing area, so you'll be safe and secure while you learn. A whopping 72 percent of the trails are Beginner, with the balance in Intermediate designation.
Next in the progression is Mystery Mountain, with 51% Beginner, 34 percent intermediate and the remaining 15% designated as Expert trails – no double-blacks. The scenery is outstanding, and there's a lot of space between folks. One memorable feature is the tree skiing, through mature maple forests. Mystery even has 3 back-country runs! You'll have plenty of opportunities to work on technique over the long runs at Mystery Mountain.
Then there's Eagle Mountain, as versatile as it gets. The top of the mountain is almost all black and double-black, with an escape route for intermediate and beginning skiers and snowboarders. Eagle is impressive... but if one day you should tire of it or get curious about the remaining mountain, head on over to the gondola area, halfway down the mountain, and catch a ride over to Moose Mountain!
Moose Mountain is the vertical challenge. Primarily black and double black trails, there are some intermediate runs as well, and a prerequisite 3% green trails for beginners who unwittingly bite off more than they can chew.
We haven't even gotten to the ski patrol, nightlife, or other attractions yet – and there are many of them – but it's already clear that Lutsen Mountains Resort is the prime choice for any Midwest ski or snowboarding vacation. We know if you come once, you'll be back again, and telling all of your friends about the awesome time you had here at Lutsen Ski Resort!
