Alyeska, Alaska Ski Experience AK

No matter how it is described, no matter what pictures or words draw images in your mind, it's still nothing in comparison to the enormous and magnificent reality that is Alaska. Skiing there is simply something that must – and we mean MUST – be experienced. Until you've seen it with your own eyes, stood atop a peak with your own skis, there are no words to describe it... but of course, we're going to try.

Getting to Girdwood is pretty much painless. You fly in to Anchorage, one of some 200 flights in and out of Ted Stevens Anchorage International each day. The flight itself is painless as well, not much more than 5 hours from most everywhere but New York) and then it's only 40 miles south on the Seaward Highway, which takes you within 4 miles of the resort itself. (Just about everything in Colorado takes longer to get to.) Arrive during daylight hours. You're certain to be in awe along the way.

Alyeska Mountain is nothing short of a miracle. You'll look at it, and part of you is excited, while the other part is a little apprehensive thinking “Am I really going to ski that thing?” Few have ever seen so much snow in one place before! But yes, you are. The slopes are well groomed, the conditions superb. You're going to ski it, alright, and you're going to love every single moment of it!

Ready for the kicker? Sure your heart can handle it? They have heli-skiing, too! You bet! You can get a helicopter ride to the backcountry and fly down a guaranteed 16,000 - 20,000 vertical ft. of virgin Alaskan powder per day! All those mountains are at your beckon call, covered in the winter with 50-90 FEET of snow!

Beginner to expert and beyond, Alyeska brings you the very best skiing in the most breathtaking country imaginable, and all right at the feet of convenient Anchorage, Alaska. Want to take a day off from alpine skiing or snowboarding try snowmobiling (called “snow machines” by Alaskans) the states unofficial winter past time. Or go Nordic, cross country skiing or snowshoeing or dog sledding, ice climbing, mountaineering, and ice fishing are all also available, but that's not all Telemark lessons open up a whole new way of looking at skiing. How about a parasail with skis? If you can dream it up, you can do it in Alyeska!

There are some fine restaurants in the resort itself, clubs, live music, dancing, even a body spa; you don't have to leave the resort at all. But if you decide you want to, nearby Girdwood is there to bring you an ice cream shop and bakery, book store, candle factory, a ski and snowboard shop; A plethora of lodging choices awaits. There's even local Rolfing and massage therapist!

And the Northern Lights... impossible to forget as the mountains themselves. There's nothing else quite like it, and no way to describe the experience of skiing in the Last Frontier. If you've thought about Alaska, dreamt of Alaska, wondered what it's like, if the most incredible skiing adventure of your life sounds like a good time, Alyeska is something you've just got to do. Give yourself this ski or snowboarding experience. Then just try telling others how awesome it was.
