It's been said that the only thing "little" about Utah's Little Cottonwood Canyon is the name. Just 29 miles from Salt Lake International Airport marks the entryway to a world of unforgettable winter adventures.

When driving in on Utah Route 210, first-time and repeat visitors alike are awestruck by the impressive mountain vistas unfolding before their eyes. Since the majority of land within the canyon is part of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest, this natural, national treasure will be preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Long a favorite of backcountry skiers and rock climbers, the canyon offers unparalleled athletic challenges, like the famed Y and Tanner's Couloirs. But the canyon is also home to two, world renowned alpine ski resorts: Snowbird and Alta.

Alta is a traditional skiers' mountain (no snowboarding, please) with a no nonsense ambiance, while Snowbird tends to pamper its guests within a resort atmosphere. But the beauty of it is, one isn't forced to choose between the two. With the advent of the 2001-02 season, Alta and Snowbird, while maintaining their own identity, will be interconnected-- accessible on the same lift ticket!

The total combined stats of both areas is impressive, to say the least. On one ticket, you get 4,700 skiable acres, 22 lifts--including a tramway--nine base area lodges, 22 restaurants, two childcare facilities and that's not to mention the snow!

The Dean of Ski Writers, the late I.William Berry, wrote, "Nobody matches Snowbird and Alta for the sheer quality of snow. Maybe the Sierras get a tad more, and maybe Bridger almost gives 'em a run for the fluff, but on overall magnificence of snow these two ski mountains are not only the best in the country, but according even to Europhiles, possibly in the entire world."

His statement is not to be taken lightly because Berry was a somewhat cynical ski writer who pulled no punches. If he said it's the best quality snow, the odds are you'll reach a similar conclusion on your next visit. So what are you waiting for?
